Become a Referee

The Colorado Referee Administration (CRA) has a significant need for enough referees to manage all the soccer games across the state. CRA is asking every soccer club to identify adults, coaches, parents, and players (age 13 and up), who are interested in taking the 4-5 online course plus the field training. What a great opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the game and to earn some extra money.

This would be a great way for players to invest in their own knowledge and skills for soccer.

Frequently Asked Questions - FAQs

How do I register?
To register for the referee course, go to the Colorado Referee Administration here.  ALSO, please send an email to [email protected] to let us know you are registered for the course. This is very important so we can track how many USC referees in training we have, and to schedule the field training that is required for your certification.

What does the training entail?
Referee training involves an online course that takes approximately 4-5 hours to complete, plus field training where the referee candidate will take the field to referee while instructors observe and support their practice. USC would like to organize scrimmage games between USC teams where the referees in training can complete their field training.  We will need at least 10 people to sign up for the referee course in order to provide this field training through USC at LSP.

How much does it cost?
The cost of registration is $90, plus the cost of the referee uniform kit and equipment which is an additional $50-75. *USC would like to help alleviate some of this cost. People related to USC who complete the course and their first official paid game will receive a $25 gift card from Scheel's.

How much do I get paid as a referee?
Referees are paid between $20-60 per game, depending on league, age of players, and game length. You can work a lot of games, or work only a few, whatever works best with your schedule.

I'm concerned about spectators heckling me from the sidelines. What should I do?
Unruly and inappropriate behavior from the sidelines towards referees is a major concern for the Colorado Referee Administration (CRA). Protocols and procedures are being put in place to empower the referees to take action when such behavior occurs. Consequences for the offenders are also being developed. USC is committed to support all referees and will be making a focused effort to have additional presence at games held at LSP to make sure that such inappropriate behavior towards officials does not occur or is shut down quickly. USC will not tolerate inappropriate behavior of any kind - from spectators or coaches - towards any referee official.
